Korbous is a small coastal town about an hour from Tunis, known for its natural hot springs and mineral water that runs directly from the hillside into pools and hammams. I went there specifically to try a real traditional hammam, not the spa version you find in Paris hotels.
A traditional Tunisian hammam is not a relaxing experience in the way Europeans understand relaxation. You enter a steam room, you are covered in black soap, and then someone scrubs you with a kessa glove until what comes off your skin looks like you have been living in a construction site. It is intense, physical, and genuinely effective.
The hammam master in Korbous did not speak French or English. Communication happened through gestures and through the universal language of someone putting you in a position and expecting you to stay there. I did not argue.
The water in Korbous comes from thermal springs with high mineral content. It is hot, naturally so, and the combination of steam, black soap, thermal water, and physical scrubbing left my skin feeling completely different afterward. Lighter is the only word I have for it.
This is not a tourist hammam. There are no mood lighting or essential oil menus. It is a local facility used by local people for a practical purpose. That is exactly why it is worth going.
Budget about an hour and a half for the full experience including travel from Tunis. Go in the morning before the heat of the day. And eat something beforehand because you will be empty afterward.
