I was flying back to Paris from Phuket on Qatar Airways. My connection in Doha was long enough to qualify for the stopover program. I booked a 4-star hotel through Discover Qatar for around 14 euros and spent the night in Doha instead of sleeping in the terminal.
The program works like this. If your layover is between 12 and 96 hours on a Qatar Airways ticket, you can book hotel nights at heavily discounted rates through the Discover Qatar website. Options start at around 14 euros for 4-star and go up to around 30 for 5-star. The booking is separate from your flight and has to be done in advance.
Hamad International Airport in Doha is consistently ranked among the best airports in the world. Walking through it at midnight I understood why. Enormous, quiet, well-designed, with an indoor garden and lighting that makes the space feel less institutional than most airports manage. I picked up a coconut water before my gate closed. It cost too much, as airport food always does.
French passport holders do not need a visa in advance for Qatar. Immigration was straightforward and fast. I booked an Uber from the airport and was at the Holiday Inn Doha Business Park within 30 minutes of landing.
The hotel room was large and well-equipped with traditional bathroom fixtures and an unexpected welcome cookie on the desk. I was exhausted from the flight from Phuket but I set an early alarm because I was not going to spend my Doha stopover asleep.
If you are flying Qatar Airways with a long connection, use the stopover program. Even a few hours in Doha is worth doing. The city is genuinely interesting and the hotel cost less than a taxi ride in Paris.
