People told me Medellin had the best nightlife in South America. Coming from Paris, I was skeptical but curious. I decided to test that on a Sunday night, which most cities treat as a rest day. Medellin did not.
The pub crawl started at 8pm in the Provenza district, which is the main nightlife strip in the Laureles neighborhood. First stop was a hostel rooftop with board games and a relaxed crowd. I gave it a 4 out of 10 for nightlife purposes. Pleasant, not electric.
The second hostel had a rooftop hot tub and beer pong tables. It felt more like a backpacker circuit than a local night out, which is fine but not why I came to Medellin.
Things changed when we moved into the streets. Provenza at night is loud and layered. Music spills out from every door. Salsa, bachata, reggaeton, sometimes all three within the same block. I entered a multi-level club that I would rate a solid 7 out of 10 for energy alone.
Then it started raining. Not Paris drizzle. A full tropical downpour that flooded the streets in minutes and turned the whole strip into a chaotic, soaked, laughing crowd of people who refused to go home. That hour in the rain was the best part of the night.
Sunday in Medellin is real nightlife. Not the tourist version, not a special event. Just what happens when people here decide to go out. If you visit Medellin and skip the Sunday night scene because it sounds quiet, you are making a mistake.
