European Day on May 9th transforms Place de la Republique into an outdoor festival of culture, food, and music. I went primarily to explore the cultural booths and the event itself, with no particular expectation about the musical programme. I left having witnessed one of the most affecting concert performances I have covered in Paris.

Solann is a Ukrainian artist who has been living and working in Europe since the war began. Her music is difficult to categorize neatly: it sits between pop, soul, and something more folk-influenced, and her voice has a quality of direct emotional transmission that does not require translation.

Before her set, the event had the energy of a pleasant public cultural celebration. National booths, a quiz about Cyprus, the kind of organized fun that European institutions produce. Then Solann walked out and the atmosphere changed.

She spoke about Ukraine between songs. Not at length and not in a way that felt like political positioning, but with the directness of someone for whom the reality of what is happening in her country is not abstract. The crowd on the square, a diverse mix of Parisians and tourists and people from across Europe, went quiet in a specific way.

The performance itself earned a 10 out of 10 from me and from every person I interviewed afterward. The production was more elaborate than I had expected for an outdoor public event, with lighting that transformed the Place de la Republique into something that felt genuinely theatrical.

I went to European Day at Place de la Republique with no plan to cover a concert that would stay with me. That is one of the reasons I continue to cover events in Paris rather than only the ones I know in advance will be significant.
