On a summer evening in Paris, the Quai de Seine becomes the living room of the city. People drag blankets and wine glasses down to the water. Street musicians set up at intervals along the bank. Couples walk slowly. Groups of students argue about where to sit. This is not the Paris from the postcards. It is better.
I walked the full stretch from Chatelet down to the Pont Alexandre III on a July evening, during what turned out to be Paris-Plages, the annual summer event where the city transforms the riverside into temporary beach areas. The 2025 edition had a Brazilian theme, complete with samba music, caipirinha stands, and the kind of relaxed energy that Paris usually reserves for the very height of summer.
Along the way I stopped to talk to people. A couple from Brazil who had been living in Paris for three years said the summer quais reminded them of Sao Paulo, not because of the weather but because of the way people come together outside. Two Ukrainian tourists said Paris in summer was the most beautiful thing they had seen since the war started. A group of students from Madagascar explained how their community organizes parties in the city and gave me three restaurant recommendations I immediately wrote down.
The walk ends naturally at the Pont Alexandre III, the most ornate bridge in Paris, covered in golden statues and looking out over the Seine toward the Eiffel Tower. In the evening light it is an extraordinary place to stand still for a moment.
This walk costs nothing. Buy something to eat from one of the river stalls, find a spot on the banks, and let the evening do the rest. This is how Parisians actually spend their summers.
